Making time for exercise is half the battle. The other half is sticking to it! What can you do when you lack motivation?
At the gym the other day I ran into a member I hadn’t seen in a while. She confessed she’d fallen off the wagon for a bit. After going strong with her workouts for three weeks, she got frustrated by a lack of results, and let other things in her life take priority over her workouts.
The good news is, she realized she’d hit a bump in the road and needed to get back on the horse.
It wasn’t easy, but she knows she wants to lose weight, feel better and get healthier, and it isn’t going to happen if she doesn’t make it a priority.
What to Do When You Lack Motivation
- Think about why you started. This sounds cliche, but it really works. There’s a reason why you started working out or eating healthy, usually a powerful one. Always come back to it when you start to lose your way.
- Take baby steps. Rome wasn’t built in a day and a new body wasn’t either. Trying to go from 0 to 60 almost always backfires. Focus on one thing you can improve upon each day. Small changes add up over time.
- Be your own cheerleader. It’s so easy to beat ourselves up when we fall off the wagon or slip on our diet. But all this does is make us feel bad and doesn’t get us any closer to our goals. Make exercise and eating right a positive thing by celebrating small victories and patting yourself on the back just for showing up.
There are always going to be things that get in the way of diet and exercise. It is up to you whether or not you let them. Make your health a priority and you will find a way to fit it in. When you struggle to find your motivation, remember, fitness is a journey, not a destination. Each day is a new opportunity to improve!
