Coffee is the reason I get out of bed in the morning.
Ok, not really, I get out of bed to train my morning clients and because I love life (is there any other reason??) but I certainly look forward to that morning cup of coffee as I start my day.
Clients often ask if it is “ok” to drink coffee. They want to know if it is good or bad for weight loss and health.
The answer is yes, but also, no.
Black coffee has zero calories and does have some good antioxidants and polyphenols. So it can absolutely be a good thing to drink, in moderation.
It also is very acidic and of course packs a caffeine punch, so too much can be hard on the stomach, bad for digestion and not good for sleep.
When it comes to black coffee, one to three cups per day is perfectly fine and can have health benefits.
More than that and it starts to have some potential drawbacks and might be a bad thing.
That’s black coffee. But many of us do not drink our coffee black. We may add a little creamer, some sugar, or we go to Starbucks and order a Caramel Machiatto with whip and basically we are having a milk shake.
This is where coffee gets us into trouble. Too many coffee drinks are basically a liquid dessert. Some Starbucks drinks have as much as 50 grams of sugar which is twice the amount we should have in a day.
These drinks are very bad for weight loss because they pack tons of calories and sugar but aren’t a meal so we don’t feel like we took in all those calories and they spike blood sugar and can lead to a crash.
A little creamer is ok, even a little sugar in your coffee or coconut oil. But once we pass into latte territory things go downhill pretty fast.
So the answer to “is coffee ok when I am trying to lose weight” is yes, one to three cups of black coffee a day is fine. Anything else and I would say the answer is no.
But if it gets you out of bed in the morning, go for it!
